I first starting going to Jake's about ten years ago. I had a summer job working in the canyons up in Monrovia and every day my best friend and I took our lunch break down the hill. Usually we had lunch in the Home Depot parking lot because we both had a crush on the girl who ran the hot dog cart. We would each eat about three hot dogs and drink somewhere between two and twelve cans of Country Time lemonade and sit there for an hour admiring her. Hot Dog Girl, we called her. Our originality matched our coolness.
But some days we wanted more food than hot dogs from a cart, and we would go to Jake's. It was always good, and, although I don't remember the prices, I'm sure they were reasonable. But after that summer I never went there again. I returned almost a decade later, though, and I don't see that much has changed. I got a pulled pork sandwich. It was very good. I liked the sauce (although they used too much, as places that pre-sauce a sandwich usually do) but the sandwich definitely did not need mayonnaise on it. It says on the menu that they put mayo on the barbecue sandwich, which I have never seen before on a pulled pork sandwich, and I immediately thought 'well, I'll just ask for it without mayo.' But then I thought 'well, I do like mayo, maybe it will be interesting.' It wasn't. There is a reason I've never seen mayo on a barbecue sandwich: it's completely unnecessary.
Anyway, I was pleased to be back at Jake's. It isn't great barebcue, but it's good, and they were very friendly. I considered driving by Home Depot and getting a hot dog for old times' sake, but I decided to let that one go.
